Today my prayer study has been about gratitude. Today I focused on thanking God for all of the people in my life who made me the woman I am today.
Today I am grateful for my parents… I will write more about them as we approach Mother’s Day and Father’s day. But today I thanked God for them. Today I am thankful for my dad who provided for us, taught us to laugh with his jokes and his puns and taught us to serve others and to be community minded. Today I am thankful for my mom who taught me to love God, love the scriptures, to be fiercely loyal to family, how to love unconditionally, to work hard, to read, to love the arts, and not take things too seriously.
Today I am grateful for my siblings who were my first friends and playmates, who taught me to mother (sheepish grin), taught me to share, and are my greatest cheerleader… next to my parents, of course.
Today I am thankful for my Grandpa White who taught me that it is okay to be quiet sometime, to make bread, and for memories of slumber parties with Vick’s Vapor Rub… and bedtime stories.
Today I am thankful for my uncle Byron and my aunt Marara, who were my only aunts and uncles to live close enough to get to know, who were spent every holiday and important event with my family and who taught me to love cultures from all around the world.
Today I am thankful for John… so many lessons there! and for hanging in there while I figure life out… and for my kids… so many lessons there too. I am thankful they all agreed to allow me to practice what it means to be a good person and to be Christ-like.
Today I am thankful for Joanna… my BFF, who knows all my dirt and loves me anyway.
Today I am thankful for Jeff… my “work husband,” for allowing me to boss him a bit at work and for giving me a space to create.
Deke, my junior high friend who befriended me when I wasn’t cool, saving me many times from the mean kids who found great pleasure from tying me to the tennis court fence and leaving me there for the afternoon.
Today I am thankful for Beth and Jon Basham who taught me to love music and began my journey singing, freeing my voice.
Today I am thankful for Warren Gibson who taught me how to work and who gave me my first paying job helping him clean and preparing the church building for services. From him I learned the value of quality work and reverence for the church building
Today I am thankful for Shirley Carey who attempted to teach me to play the piano… I should have paid attention better. I would have been better much faster.
Today I am thankful for my mom’s friends June Bonkosky who was always welcoming and who went on adventures to lakes with our family and Clea Matson whom I have cherished memories of quilting and canning and Sue Van… who I also have great memories of family activities… and oddly, potato chips.
Today I am thankful for Max Williams who is the first Bishop I remember. he taught me to love humor and he gave the greatest hugs.
Today I am thankful for YW leaders – Paulette Bartley and Diane Kohler who helped me to discover new skills… and who made youth church meetings for one less painful.
