There’s a well-known Chinese proverb that says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Sadly, far too many people never get started on that journey. Fear keeps them from learning, from moving forward, and making big changes to reach their destination. Life is an adventure, however, things we want are rarely handed to us on a silver platter. It takes work. We have to put one foot in front of the other. It is Okay if the the steps frighten or terrify us. Take a breath and take a leap of faith.
“Little by little, a little becomes a lot” – Tanzanian Proverb
Think of change as small steps you repeat over time to that you don’t feel overwhelmed.
Psalm 37:23. “The Lord Directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.”
We often want to run before we can even walk, or want everything in place right now. However, God can use these small beginnings as stepping stones to something greater. They may not be large steps, but they can still take us in the right direction. By taking these small steps in faith, we can find new opportunities that God may be laying before us.
Esther is is an example of one who trusted the small steps set before her. Esther taking small steps in God’s plan to become Queen. Ancient Israel trusting God on a day-by-day basis through the wilderness.
Taking life one day at time, one step at a time is a religious concept that I need to wrap my head around. But I am impatient. I don’t like waiting.
Life doesn’t always work out that way. Many times we aren’t financially able to make a big payment all at once and we have to chip away at it in bite-size pieces. Health doesn’t come and pounds don’t come off. Sometimes the wiser path is taking small steps.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In one of the episodes she said: “The steps you take don’t have to be big. They just need to take you in the right direction.”
That is what matters.
Matthew 25:21 Says something like, “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
If a task seems insurmountable or if my goals seem unreachable, I need to take a breath. Focus on one step. No giving up. Just divide the goal into smaller pieces, and take them one at a time. I can make progress. It’ll be slow, but every 1,000-mile journey starts with the first step. And you can’t get to the last step without taking the second and then the third and then the fourth and so on.
That’s it! I am a slow moving sloth taking it one step at a time.
Sure. The big picture matters. But for today, I will focus on my next step. It doesn’t have to be huge or earth shattering. It’s just needs to be in the right direction.
