Character is the foundation upon which a true Warrior is built.
Our carnal minds are most often self-serving wonderful creations. Our brain reflects and produces, creates and interprets, and analyzes every concrete or abstract point or symbol from life – all to comfort, prolong life, understand, and survive.
Part of the process of building character is “pretending” when we see others are watching. The real test of our character is who we are when we think no one is watching- when we think we are alone, when our thoughts echo in our heads, and plans are made for the minutes, the hour, the day, the month, or the year.
I help coach actors at the local high school during the school year. I tell the students that the hardest part of acting is when you are NOT delivering lines. You are just there, in character – acting like a character, standing like a character, breathing like a character, listening and waiting like a character.
The Warrior that is the real Me is the Warrior I am inside my actions. I am the sum of my actions and reactions to the world around me. I am as complex and as simple as the next person.
Everyday I practice strengthening the Warrior within – even when I am alone. As I write I hope someone will read what I think when no one is looking. When I teach I teach strive to be natural and hope to be effective and true… even when no one is observing or even listening. When I parent I hope that my children feel that I am “present” at all times – my words haunting them throughout the day reminding them of who they are and where they hope to be one day. I hope that I am kind and smart around my kids, even when they aren’t paying attention. As a spouse, as a friend, as a sibling, as a daughter, I work to be more observant and caring.
I do spend a fair amount of time on my own. In these moments I don’t want to focus on not being alone. In these moments I feel the test of the true Warrior within.
I am a layered creature full of potential.
Intelligence+memories+passions+kindness+curiosity+frustration+earnestness+ability+creativity+testimony+faith+strength+x,y,and z= ME. What I am when no one is watching gives me insight into who I am, beyond being a nice person, beyond being a wife, mom, sister or friend.
I aim to be the same person whether someone is looking or not. This is what makes a WARRIOR!
