Thought Tuesday

Adulting 101 –

Perhaps you have heard the saying, "measure twice, cut once."  This is a phrase I use all the time in a scene shop.  However, I am finding more and more students "come close" and yet, "close" is not really good enough.  It is just guessing.  The consequence of "guessing" is wasted material... and money...  You… Continue reading Adulting 101 –

#bethelight – Day 28

Yesterday I wrote a note to a student.  It was fun to see her face light up as she read it. Today is National Day of Listening. Be an active listener.  It is so easy to be distracted by your own thoughts and your environment when someone else is talking.  When you are distracted you… Continue reading #bethelight – Day 28

First Week of the Holiday Season – Success!

Last week was a crazy good week of eating!  I succeeded in staying away from unhealthy, inflammation causing foods.  Although I had a couple days of horrible leg cramps, I made it through Thanksgiving and actually LOST weight!  When does that happen? Monday looked like this: Jamba Juice for breakfast; a yummy salad with a… Continue reading First Week of the Holiday Season – Success!

#bethelight – Day 27

Yesterday I made a plan for following the #LIGHTtheWORLD. Today I will be looking for ways to #bethelight on my own.  It's a busy day... getting back into the groove of school, work, lessons, and the like.  It will be a long 13-14 hour day.  All the more reason to work on spreading kindness! I… Continue reading #bethelight – Day 27

28 Years and Counting

Still moving forward… 28 years is a while. 🙂

wboyack's avatarResigning as the General Manager of the Universe

So… Today is my anniversary… married 28 years.

I’ve spent some time looking through old pictures.  Ah… memories!  We have had some eventful years!  So many lessons learned!  Some lessons tested our marriage.  All lessons add strength, personally and as a unit.  Some lessons brought great happiness and a few sadness in those 28 years.  All of our experiences together have taught me that I have found a person that makes me want to be a better person.

A Week of Thankful Boyacks

We’ve been busy! Check it out!

wboyack's avatarResigning as the General Manager of the Universe

This is always a big week around our house.  First, there is my birthday… one year older, but not to sure about wiser.  My birthday was like any other day.  Later in the week I spoiled myself and got a hair cut.  Too bad I can never get my hair to look as nice as it does when I leave the hair stylist!  John took me to see a movie and out to dinner for my birthday too.

I’ve been working on my #bethelight efforts.  One of my favorites was when we went to Jamba Juice and left a big tip… read this to know more about that… #bethelight – Day 21

Changing Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving was a success! People looking for the recipes… click on the title of the recipe and it will take you to the recipe I already posted on my blog. Thanks for reading!

It is Thanksgiving Day at my house.  In between the making of all the “fixin’s” and the arrival of the guests, I decided to do a little research as to how this day came about and what might have really been served for dinner.

The “traditional” meal includes roasted turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie.  This holiday feast originated in November 1621.  The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered together to celebrate a bountiful harvest and new friends.  This gathering is regarded as our “first Thanksgiving.”  However, is wasn’t a national holiday until much later.  In 1846, Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor of the Godley’s Lady’s Book magazine, campaigned for an annual national holiday of thanksgiving after discovering some writing mentioned the gathering of 1621.  In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln declared two national Thanksgivings: one in August commemorated the Battle of Gettysburg, one in November to…

Warriors Look Good in Pearls

I’ve been working on my pearls. some days it is hard to admit that trials are blessings. However, time and experiences has been teaching me that trials make us better… beautiful pearls.

Okay… not the most attractive picture.  It helps me make a point.

The sea oyster, injured and irritated, places layers of its tear-like fluid called nacre over the damaging “grit” on its tongue.

Slowly, over time (maybe even 5-6 years) this irritation, this hardship transforms into a breathtaking pearl!

Poetic!

The thing is… we all face adversity and set backs.  We all experience that little grain – a stressful work week, illness, set backs in expectations.  It’s hard to be your best when you feel life is at its worst.  It is hard to remember that learning from adversity and transforming it into something beautiful and worthwhile take time.

Adulting 101 – Time

Still working on educating the adults of the future. Timeliness is essential to success. Whose with me?

wboyack's avatarResigning as the General Manager of the Universe

As mentioned last Tuesday in my Thought Tuesday Blog Adulting 101, I believe I have contributed to the growing problem of teens entering adulthood lacking basic skills.  Despite and education system that focuses dollars and hours on testing skills, I can’t find any evidence of testing life skills of students before graduation.  Basic skills such as basic household tasks, etiquette, community resources, getting a job, and finances are lacking.  I also believe that the missing knowledge is an oversight on my part… on our part.  We missed teaching these skills in an effort to cram reading, writing, math, science, extra curricular activities, etc. into their overloaded brains.

Thus… today I begin to change that.  Look out teen who lives in my house.  Here it comes! (all you other teens can listen up too!).

Lesson 1-

My life is still so fast paced that I haven’t been adventurous with food.  I haven’t even taken pictures of what I am eating.

I will do better this coming week.

Again, I ate veggies or a smoothie for breakfast.

Again, I had a salad or soup for lunch.

I made Asparagus and Sunny Side up Eggs over Grits

For my actual birthday we made Greek Hummus Pizza
